Educational Background

Dr. Shawn Cohen studied at McGill University, first in physiology as a University Scholar in 1990, medicine in 1994, and a residency in ophthalmology in 1999. Dr. Cohen then completed a combined research, clinical, and surgical glaucoma fellowship training at Duke University in USA.

Professional Experience

Dr. Cohen is a leading glaucoma specialist with published research in restoring vision in glaucoma patients and a developer of new and advanced glaucoma and cataract surgical techniques taught worldwide.

In his current role as Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at McGill University, Dr. Cohen specializes in routine and complicated glaucoma and cataract surgery and mentors local and international residents and fellows.

Accomplishments and Awards

Dr. Cohen was the recipient of the prestigious Frank Buller Award for Most Outstanding Surgical Instructor. Additionally, his published and presented work on restoring lost vision in glaucoma received the Best Glaucoma Paper Award for a Staff Ophthalmologist from the Canadian Glaucoma Society. Dr. Cohen is always on the cutting edge of knowledge in his field. He continues to develop and teach new surgical techniques, including a published and world-first method of office-based glaucoma surgery as well as numerous videos and public appearances.

Dr. Cohen’s warm, friendly, and empathetic approach to eye care is all about patients and their families. While providing care in English and French, he has also studied Hebrew, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Russian and other languages in order to communicate with his multicultural patients and to provide the best care he can. Dr. Cohen believes in hope, prevention, and advocacy.
